Hooper's Lake Redevelopment History Page
Hooper's Lake was once a popular prairie gathering area not only for the residents of the immediate area, but for residents of surrounding communities as well. Hooper's Lake has been utilized since 1896 for picnics and recreational activities.
Located approximately 100 kms north west of Brandon, Manitoba within the Rural Municipality of Miniota. The area was designated as a park when Mrs. Hooper donated it in 1938 in her 96th year. Recognizing the beauty and value of the area, she wanted to ensure that this 80 acre lake front area remained to be enjoyed as a park and recreational area.
In 1905 a bath house was built and laying out a swimming area was also undertaken. In 1906 Mr.Chas. A. Flower had a boat house constructed at Hooper's Lake. In the thirties bath houses were bought from the Narrows at Shoal Lake,Manitoba, however high water levels of the forties and fifties destroyed them. In the mid-sixties new bath houses were contructed and ball diamonds were laid out. In 1969 a kitchen house was erected and electric power installed, the kitchen house is still being utilized today. In 1970 Hooper's Lake was given the Manitoba Centennial grant for the Miniota Municipality to be used for improvements in the resort area.
During the 1990's the water levels in the lake dropped dramatically. As the lake disappeared, so too did the activities surrounding Hooper's Lake.
With recent high water levels renewed interest towards the re-development of Hooper's Lake. In 2000, local residents formed an ad hoc volunteer committee to investigate cleanup of the area and to return the lake to its former glory days.To date approximately $70,000 has been spent towards the re-development of Hooper's Lake.
